Abstract

The development of non-timber forest product-based processed products requires assistance that strengthens the technical, managerial, and marketing capacities of community groups. This study aimed to analyse the role of forestry extension workers in the development of instant ginger products and packaging at the Majojo Forest Farmer Group (KTH) in Tuguwaji Village, Tidore Islands City, and to identify supporting and inhibiting factors in the assistance process. The study used descriptive qualitative and quantitative approaches. Data were collected through observation, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation involving 20 purposively selected respondents. Quantitative data were analysed using a Likert scale and effectiveness index, while qualitative data were used to enrich interpretation. The results showed that the extension workers' role was categorised as very good in the educator (mean score 4.26), facilitator (4.25), motivator (4.22), and consultant/technical advisor (4.26) aspects, while the market access and promotion aspect was categorised as good (3.97). The total effectiveness index reached 83.90%, indicating a highly effective level. Extension assistance contributed to improvements in raw material selection, hygienic processing, product diversification, the use of aluminium foil standing pouch packaging, product information labelling, and marketing strengthening through consignment and direct sales. The main supporting factors were member participation, raw material availability, extension worker competence, strong group institutions, and government programme support. The inhibiting factors included limited production facilities, narrow marketing networks, limited assistance frequency, and differences in members' understanding. Thus, forestry extension workers play a strategic role in improving product quality, packaging, and competitiveness of Majojo's instant ginger enterprise.
